Feijoa
Acca sellowiana
| Role | Mid-storey fruit · informal hedge · wind buffer |
|---|---|
| Climate | Warm-temperate NZ; dislikes hard frost pockets when young |
| Light | Full sun to light shade; better fruit in open light |
| Soil | Free-draining; tolerant once established; mulch well |
| Harvest | Autumn; pick up fallen fruit daily in season |
| Notes | Plant two or more varieties for reliable pollination |
Feijoa earns its place on boundaries because it does more than one job. As a hedge it softens wind. As a crop it returns in autumn when the vegetable garden is tired. In winter its evergreen mass holds the line of the design when deciduous fruit is bare.
Give it room to thicken. Shear only if you need a formal face; fruiting is better with a looser silhouette and light into the interior. On salty edges, set plants back from the worst exposure and let a tougher shelter species take the first hit.
